Perpetually Closed Gallery

Last updated · New York

Walk past the Solow Art & Architecture Foundation’s ground floor gallery space on 57th Street, and something seems off. It’s not a weird day. Nobody’s at lunch. The hours aren’t just limited. The truth is simpler and stranger: it never opens. Not once.

Through the expansive glass windows, under full track lighting, the collection sits on permanent display — works by Francis Bacon, Franz Kline, Matisse, Balthus, Giacometti, and Henry Moore. The collection belongs to Sheldon Solow, the real estate magnate who owns the entire building. Nobody has a clean answer for why Solow chose to display his art this way — sealed away behind glass, lit for an audience that can only press their faces to the window. As gestures go, it’s either generous or maddening, depending on your tolerance for proximity without access.
